Durham Street in Wigan is a £6.3m development completed over two phases providing a total of 49 new affordable homes. The development comprised 38 three bedroom houses, 1 two bedroom house and 6 four bedroom houses for families; it also featured 1 three bedroom bungalow and 3 two bedroom bungalows specifically for older people.

All properties feature high levels of insulation and have been situated to obtain maximum solar gains which should help to reduce the fuel costs of the occupants.

Rowlinson worked closely with the client and the architect to ensure that the design of the new homes reflected the traditional Wigan style terraces. The properties were constructed in red brick with red mortar complementing the Brazilian slate roofs, aluminium gutters and art-stone sills.

The scheme involved significant change to the site infrastructure, in particular the sewer and drainage diversionary work. The complexity of the work was compounded by the undulating topography of the site..
